GrazeSense Successfully Completes, Revolutionizing Pasture Management

We are thrilled to announce the successful completion of the GrazeSense project! Over the past six months, our team has developed, tested, and validated a cutting-edge smart agriculture platform designed to transform how farmers manage grazing lands and monitor livestock.

Developed under the AGRARIAN ecosystem’s Open Call 1, GrazeSense tackles one of the most time-consuming challenges in agriculture: monitoring extensive, often remote, pasturelands. By combining autonomous drone swarms, artificial intelligence, and satellite communications, we have created a solution that turns hours of manual labor into a seamless, data-driven process.

The Technology: What GrazeSense Does

The GrazeSense platform distributes computational tasks across multiple layers to ensure reliable operation, even in areas with zero cellular coverage. Our core innovations include:

  • Autonomous Drone Swarms: The system can coordinate up to 10 UAVs simultaneously. A swarm of 5 drones can comprehensively survey 100 hectares in less than 1 hour—a task that traditionally takes a farmer 4 to 6 hours of manual field walking.
  • AI-Powered Livestock Detection: Using a custom-trained YOLOv11 computer vision model, our drones can identify and count sheep in real-time. We achieved a 72% detection accuracy, significantly outperforming our initial 60% target.

  • NDVI Vegetation Analysis: Using multispectral imaging (RGB and Near-Infrared), GrazeSense maps out pasture health. The system color-codes grazing zones to help farmers identify optimal feeding areas and prevent overgrazing.

  • Satellite Connectivity: In collaboration with the National Centre for Scientific Research “Demokritos” (NCSRD), we integrated geosynchronous satellite communications. This allows the system to operate flawlessly in the most isolated mountainous and rural regions.

Real-World Impact and Farmer Approval

Technology is only as good as its practical application. We conducted extensive field demonstrations with local farmers and agricultural associations. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive:

  • 100% Mission Success: Zero critical failures across all field tests.
  • High User Satisfaction: User acceptance testing yielded satisfaction ratings over 80%, with farmers praising the platform’s intuitive Mission Control Web Application.
  • Actionable Insights: Instead of overwhelming users with raw data, GrazeSense provides straightforward recommendations, helping farmers save labor costs and implement sustainable land management practices.
